Problems Your Dentist Explains

Most of the time when you go to the dentist, it is for specific problems, like a toothache.  There isn’t a lot of time to sit around and talk.  While the dentist helps you remedy your current distress, there are other things he or she wishes you knew about teeth. Misconceptions about oral health are as common as the common cold.  We want to set the record straight on some issues, and share some things you may not have heard in the operatory:

Bleeding Gums are Not to Be Taken Lightly

If your hands started bleeding when you washed them, you would know something was wrong.  It is the same concept with your mouth.  Brushing your teeth shouldn’t make your gums bleed, and if it does, it is time to head to the dentist!  There are many things that can cause gums to bleed including gum disease, smoking, stress, poor diet, medications, and pregnancy to name a few.  Your dentist will be able to diagnose the cause and help get you on back on track and prevent more serious problems from developing.

No Pain Does Not Mean No Problem

If a toothache suddenly disappears, you might think you just got lucky!  More often it means that the infection has progressed so far that you may need a root canal or other emergency procedures.  Other problems like periodontal disease are painless, and if left untreated can lead to tooth loss.  Delaying calling the dentist is just postponing the pain and increased financial burden you may face later down the road.

Poor Dental Health Leads to Other Health Problems

You may have wondered why your dentist asks for your medical history.  Some people think problems in their mouth stay in their mouth.  This is not true! Just like bacteria causes your gums to become inflamed, the same bacteria can travel through your blood stream causing problems all over including:

  • Endocarditis (inflammation and infection of the inner linings of the heart).
  • Heart attack
  • Stroke- Bacteria causes a narrowing of arteries as they become inflamed to fight the infection.
  • COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disorder) causing narrowing of blood vessels leading to the lungs
  • Rheumatoid Arthritis
  • Inflammation
  • Osteoporosis
  • Diabetes

Piercing in the Mouth Are Not a Good Idea

While piercings are becoming more popular everywhere on the body, any dentist can tell you the problems they have seen from piercings in the mouth. From tooth chipping, infection (including Hepatitis B & C), loss of taste from nerve damage, and choking hazards from swallowing the jewelry or inflammation which blocks the airway.  While it may be a way to show your individuality, there are serious adverse risks to be aware of.

At Emergency Dental, we strive to provide you with the best possible knowledge and care to keep you healthy and smiling for a long time!
